Timka & Alisa Mission Accomplished

Ukrainian bears rescued and relocated to a sanctuary in Romania. Their story and photos below.

2020 – Timka & Alisa rescued from Khmelnytskyi City zoo in Ukraine.

Mission Accomplished… 2 Bears saved.

Ukrainian bears Timka & Alisa rescued by us from a horrendous city zoo and relocated to AMP Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Romania in September 2020. Timka and Alisa both in their 20’s had spent their entire lives in captivity and never felt grass or experienced digging in the dirt. Alisa who is blind was used for breeding with her mate Timka. Now they are safe and enjoying a bears life in the forests of Romania where they safe and cared for by the excellent staff at the sanctuary.
They have settled in beautifully with Timka digging a den to hibernate for the first time. Alisa dig not hibernate but she has calmed down immensely and does not pace in circles and sway from side to side continuously. Even though she is blind, she easily navigates her enclosure, swims. digs in the dirt and find her food without issues.
After fighting for 2 years we were eventually able to get Alisa and Timka, 2 Eurasian Brown bears released into our care. These 2 bears had languished in a concrete and steel city zoo their whole lives. Alisa is blind and was used as a breeding station. There were initially 3 bears at this zoo prior to us hearing about their plight but Timka in a fit of rage killed the other male in front of a crowd zoo visitors. Many people say he is an aggressive bear and very dangerous. We work with many bears and all bears and any wild animal can be dangerous. We think it was the boredom and frustration of them being locked up like that for years added with the screaming kids and having food and objects thrown at them by visitors to the zoo that set him off. We now spend quite a bit of time with him at our holding facility where these are no visitors at all and he has a really nice nature and is calm.
In 2019 we relocated 2 bears, twin sisters Masha and Lora to AMP Libearty – Bear Sanctuary in Romania and they have agreed once again to help us by taking in Alisa and Timka.
With Alisa being blind she will need a purpose built enclosure but Libearty are completely geared up and professional to give her the best life possible.
It was not very far, a 2 day drive including clearing customs at the Romanian/Ukrainian border but as with all rescues, it is an expensive exercise.
The transport, crates and veterinary costs alone were nearly €6000 Euros and this excluded the daily feeding and care for them.
We THANK Chantal and Jeroen from SOS Zoo & Bear Rescue for their donations and support in helping us to get them rescued and then relocated to Romania.
AMP Libearty – Bear Sanctuary is a very special place with very special people devoting their lives to saving not only bears but all animals, domestic and wild. Thank you Libearty.
