Nov 2017 – 3 Bears rescued & relocated

Rescued from hellish conditions in a private zoo. This also happens to be the place where our journey of rescuing more than 20 lions started.

Free from a life of misery.

Mission Accomplished… No more inhumane cages.

3 Brown Bears – Buri, Boris and Guinevere……
Not only did we rescue and relocate the 3 bears but it was also the day we started preparations to find a home and relocate our first group of lions, Charlie, Kai, Luca and Nathan. Read more about them HERE.
Sambir, Lviv Region, Ukraine. 23 Nov 2017 A day I will never forget.
Loads of stress and tensions running high as the owner was not present to release the bears and then forbade us to bring in press. We had to reassure him that it would be positive press for him, however the press nor myself could quite control what we said as we saw the disgusting conditions and the bad state of the bears. From the time we started prepping the bears for the relocation until we got to Synevir National park it took around 10 hours(normally a 2 hour drive). The vehicle we used to transport the bears was an old Russian built Kamaz which struggled to start and get going then once moving we could not stop ))) Interesting trip on the road. It used more water and oil than diesel but it got the bears to Synevir Bear Rehabilitation Center.
It was a long cold day and even local town folk came around to see the bears off. I got stuck in and physically helped and ended up covered in bear pooh, mud and other dirt and forgot that I’m getting on and felt it that night with aches and pains in places that I did not even know I had places.
The bears were quite relaxed during the relocation and even when we got to Synevir and had to move them into their quarantine enclosures. The 2 males, Borya and Buri went in as if it was a normal thing but Jen (Guinevere) being a female decided to give us all a hard time and refused to budge but we coaxed her in using bread and honey and within a few minutes they were all relaxed, eating and drinking. Borya started prepping his bed by scraping all his straw together and seemed to bond with another rescued bear, Nastya.
The bears will now spend some time in the quarantine area to get acclimatized and receive medical attention.
Special Thanks to SOS Zoo and Bear Rescue for partnering with us on this rescue.
